Travertine (TS 14032), created in collaboration with artist Bonnie Levinthal, is inspired by her original suminagashi print. Suminagashi, meaning “ink floating,” is an ancient Japanese marbling technique in which sumi ink is floated on water and shaped into patterns through the action of natural forces such as wind or vibration or by drawing. Each print records a precise moment in time. Levinthal began experimenting with the process because its abstract forms often resemble natural phenomena.
